Summary: Wishing to avoid his birthday party at Jackie and Pete's house, the Doctor insists to Rose that Time Lord's don't have birthdays. Rose, however, knows better and gets him to come around. Sort of.
Author's Note: Written for Kali's (
thirty2flavors's) birthday. Hopefully it's great for her and not a disaster, LOL. UNBETAED LIKE WHOA. And LOL at me making up my own Time Lord rules. Research? What research?
"I don't see why we have to go over to Jackie's in order to celebrate my birthday. I don't even see why we have to celebrate my birthday, period." The Doctor heaved a long-suffering sigh as he and Rose walked through the park on their way to Jackie and Pete's residence.
"You spend your birthdays with your family and friends. And I don't know why you're complaining; you like celebrating my birthday just fine," Rose wiggled her eyebrows at the Doctor.
"Well, that's different, isn't it?" he said. "You're human and humans have birthdays. I'm a Time Lord, and Time Lords don't. So really this could just be another party and since I'm only obligated to show up for Jackie's events at holidays and family holidays, it makes the whole point moot, doesn't it?" He was spinning words, trying to find something,
anything to get out of it. "I don't even really have a birthday."
"Sure you do," Rose insisted. "The day you were created - the day the other Doctor left us here." She snorted. "Besides, we had to have
some birth date to put on your ID."
"It still doesn't mean I have a birthday!" The Doctor insisted.
Rose went quiet. "Fine then," she said simply. "I'll just return the gifts I got you."
The Doctor looked at her sharply. "Presents?"
"Well, it doesn't really matter, does it, since you don't have a birthday?" Rose said. She was smiling on the inside - she knew just how to handle him. Lucky for her he enjoyed being handled.
Even though the Doctor knew it was a ploy of Rose's (he DID love her ploys), he went quiet, curiosity starting to over take him. What would Rose have gotten him? He had just about everything he needed: Rose, his sonic screwdriver, a long brown coat, and a few new pairs of Converse sneakers.
"Well, there
is the ancient Time Lord tradition of Naming Day," the Doctor conceded, hoping he didn't appear
too desperate. "It's to celebrate the day a Time Lord picked his name. I suppose it's close enough to today to celebrate it." He quickly looked over at Rose, who appeared to be doing her best not to laugh and roll her eyes.
"So we can celebrate your naming day, then?" Rose asked, arching a cheeky eyebrow at him.
"We might as well. I always did like Naming Day."
Rose grinned and stopped in her tracks. She reached into an inside pocket of her blue leather jacket and pulled out a neatly wrapped gift.
"How..." the Doctor asked, since the gift, while small, was too big to fit into any pocket her jacket had.
"I might have had the TARDIS do a bit of work on my jacket after we towed the Earth home," Rose said airily. "Anyways," she handed him the square parcel. "Happy
Naming Day!"
Excited like a small child, the Doctor eagerly tore the wrapping off and stared at the CD case he held in his hands. "
Sleet Fleet?" He asked. "I'm sure they're brilliant, but who are they?"
"This world's version of Snow Patrol, as far as I could find. Same band members names and everything, just a different group name and some changes to the song titles and lyrics," Rose shrugged.
Sure enough, there were such titles as
Tailing Trucks and
You Might Be Cheerful. He couldn't help it; he grinned widely. "How'd you know I like them?"
"Oh, might have been about the third day you listened to their album on repeat back over there," Rose said a laugh. "I figured you might like this world's version of it, but if you don't, that's okay."
"No, no, Rose Tyler!" the Doctor said. "It's brilliant!"
"And there's one more thing." She reached back into her jacket pocket and pulled out a silver-looking thing. "I got you this too."
"What is it?" The Doctor said as Rose gave it to him.
"Click the button." He did and a small flame appeared from the device. "Ooh!" Was all he said.
"I saw how fascinated you were with the bonfire we had that one night at mum and dad's and since the sonic screwdriver didn't have a fire starting setting, I got you the lighter. I had it engraved, too."
He pulled his gaze away from the flame and took his thumb off of the button so that it disappeared.
Doctor was neatly engraved in cursive script on the side. He looked from Rose, to the lighter, and back to Rose. He positively beamed.
"I love it!" He clicked the button and the flame appeared and he fairly did a little dance. "I knew there were such things as lighters, obviously, but I guess I never paid attention to how useful they might be. This is wonderful!"
"Good for a Naming Day, then?" Rose asked smiling smugly.
He nodded eagerly, clicking and un-clicking the button to watch the flame appear and disappear. "It's fantastic! Really, Rose, this is great!"
Rose resumed walking and shook her head a few seconds later as she looked back to see the Doctor still entranced by the lighter. "Am I going to have to take it away for the party?" she asked.
The Doctor looked sheepish as he put the flame off and stuck the lighter in his suit jacket pocket. "Nope!" He hurried to catch up with Rose, all horror at a party thrown for him by Jackie seemingly gone. "I get to play with it afterwards though, right?"
Rose smiled. "I guess. But I had hoped you'd want to unwrap me afterwards."
The Doctor took her hand with a grin and laced their fingers together. "Rose Tyler, I do believe this is the best birthday ever." They continued their walk to the Tyler estate.
He didn't notice his slip and Rose didn't remind him. Happy Naming Day, indeed.
THE END
Happy Birthday, Kali!
